Lot Essay

The present group, entitled Cupid Captive, is after an original work by Charles-Auguste Fraikin (d. 1893), exhibited in plaster at the Exposition Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Brussels in 1845, in marble at the same venue three years later, and again at the Crystal Palace Great Exhibition of 1851 and the International Exhibition in Dublin in 1853. The original marble is now in the Museé Royale des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, and the plaster is conserved in the Museé Auguste Fraikin, Herentals. The work was widely reproduced in a variety of materials, including Parian ware.
