Lot Essay

A similar dish with less elaborate inscription is illustrated in B. Harrisson,Swatow in het Princessehof, Leeuwarden, 1979, p. 110-113, pl. 226, 227, 227a. The author states that the inscriptions read Islamic vows and the names of Mohammed and his disciples. Presumably the dishes were ordered for the promotion of trade in Islamic countries such as Indonesia. See also Christie's Amsterdam, 5 December 2000, lot 1.
