Lot Essay

We are grateful to Fred Meijer of the RKD for confirming the attribution to Floris van Schooten, on inspection of the original.

The oeuvre of the Haarlem painter, Floris van Schooten has often been regarded as representative of the development of still life painting in the Netherlands. His early work consists mostly of large market or kitchen scenes showing an abundance of produce with or without figures, in the tradition of Pieter Aertsen and Joachim Beuckelaer. He was occastionaly known to paint Religious and mythological subjects. Works of these subjects date from 1620 and show the influence of the Pre-Rembrandist artists in Amsterdam, most notably Jacob Pynas (see lot 7 for an example of his religious painting). His later work was greatly influenced by the younger Haarlem masters of the monochrome breakfast-pieces, Pieter Cleasz. and Willem Heda.
