Lot Essay

The pose of the Madonna and Child is similar to that in Maratta's
altarpiece of Saint Philip Neri adoring the Madonna and Child
formerly in the Church of San Giovanni dei Fiorentini and now in the Palazzo Pitti,
Florence, as well as that of the Madonna and Child in Maratta's
altarpiece in the Spada Chapel in the Chiesa Nuova in Rome.
We are grateful to Dr. Ann Sutherland Harris for confirming the attribution and providing us with additional cataloguing information.
