Made for Mrs. Richard Wilbraham, née Bootle, after the service her father, Sir Thomas Bootle, Chancellor to the Prince of Wales, had ordered in about 1730. She had her father's tea set copied by Derby, and the dinner service done in China. D.S. Howard (op. cit., vol. II, p. 182) explains all, illustrating this mug along with a mug of the earlier service (in which the parrots are olive-green) and quoting correspondence in the Derby archives from Mary Wilbraham, who wrote in 1787 regarding some "...dishes made to match some foreign...Tea China with arms etc..."
