Lot Essay

A second version is recorded with white enamel in place of the silver. Another service, seen in these rooms, 20 January 2004, lot 449, shows the arms of Torriano and Proli. It is quite possible that Nathaniel Torriano, senior supercargo and Chief of Council in Canton in the 1720s, ordered for both sides of the Proli family. Yet another version of this service exists, albeit probably as a result of the Chinese workshop confusing their orders: it displays the additional arms of Charles Boone interrupting the border at the bottom. See H. M. de Noordhout, op. cit., pp. 66-71. Also compare The Hodroff Collection, Christie's, New York, 24 January 2007, lot 254.
