Lot Essay

Charles James Mason (1791-1856) was the youngest son of Miles Mason (1752-1822), the founder of Mason's Potteries in Fenton. In 1813, Charles James Mason took out a patent on 'ironstone' china, which went on to become the most successful product sold by the Minerva Works factory due to its durabilty and strength. In August 1815, he married Sarah Spode (1764-1798), granddaughter of Josiah Spode (1733-1797) and the alliance between the two families led to Mason's acquiring a second factory then held by the Spode family in Fenton.
Charles James Mason died in 1856 and is buried at Norbury, Derbyshire.
