Lot Essay

In 1962, Norman Rockwell was commissioned by the Saturday Evening Post to paint the portrait of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, for the cover of the January 19, 1963 issue. The artist and his wife Molly were accompanied to India by the then-editor of the Post Robert Sherrod and his wife, Margaret Carson (fig. 1). Rockwell's original portrait of Nehru, as well as the present work, were given as gifts by the artist to Ms. Carson, to commemorate the trip.
