Lot Essay

Cherubino Pata is best known as Gustave Courbet's most important pupil and assistant, working and traveling with the master during the last four years of his life.

Pata was also an accomplished painter in his own right. The present lot, which is reminiscent of the great seascapes and coastal scenes of Courbet, is executed in the same robust style, with the broad brushstrokes and dark ground which is so characteristic of the master.

The present lot has been authenticated by Jean-Jacques Fernier.
