In 1953 Rolex set the base of an unequalled success story with the launch of the first Submariner model. Originally promoted as "the diver's friend" the Submariner soon became the world's most legendary tool watch. Generations later it is still enjoying wide popularity.
The reference 5508 is from the series launched in the late 1950s. The signature and scales printed in gold but with the addition of the white printed depth rating "100m=330ft".
In the movies Dr. No and Goldfinger, Sean Connery's alias James Bond is wearing a Rolex Submariner. Since then the early Submariner models without crown guard such as the present reference 5508 as well as references 6200, 6204 and others are also known as the "James Bond" models.
It is intesting to note that the present owner purchased this watch directly from the original owner who had purchased the watch new in 1963 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Attesting to the durability and fine craftsmanship of this reference the original owner was an avid diver who wore the watch while diving in the North Atlantic Ocean for 25 years.
