Lot Essay

The etching depicted by Megel is one of a celebrated series by Marco Pitteri (1703-1786), which was much admired by Fragonard when he saw them in a print shop in Venice in 1774. It has been suggested that Saint Thaddeus is Piazzetta's self-portrait.
