Lot Essay

This large and impressive cupboard veneered almost entirely in costly ebony reflects the Dutch clacissism that emerged in the third quarter of the 17th century. This new idiom which relied on architectural forms supported by sturdy Corinthean capped pilasters - sometimes placed at an angle to the corners - and enriched by festoons replaced the more renaissance inspired cupboards of the first half of the 17th century. Another ebony cupboard is in the Rijksmuseum, it has a comparable foliate carved edge to the cornice also centred by an armorial cartouche.
