Lot Essay
This Madonna is, as Professor Miklós Boskovits confirms, a characteristic work by a productive Florentine artist, whose namepiece is the Saint Ivo in Judgement in the Palazzo di Parte Guelfa in Florence. The fullest account of the Master is that of Baldini (op. cit., pp. 261-76). The artist may have been a pupil of Agnolo Gaddi, who ran one of the busiest workshops in late trecento Florence, but his work also suggests the influence of Lorenzo di Niccolò and, the Master's presumably closer contemporary, Mariotto di Nardo. The Sant'Ivo Master specialised in small devotional panels, and painted at least four other panels of the Madonna of Humility.
