Lot Essay

We are grateful to Professor Peter Humfrey for pointing out that a picture of this subject was recorded by Ridolfi as in the Ruzzini Collection, Venice (1648, ed., Hadeln, I, p. 252). Humfrey has noted that this painting can perhaps be dated to around 1557, but before the compositionally related Christ before Herod, at the Museo di Capodimonte, Naples.
