Lot Essay
George Carnegie, Lord Rosehill (1789-1807) and William Hopetoun Carnegie, 8th Earl of Northesk (1794-1878) were the two eldest sons of William, 7th Earl of Northesk (1756-1831) and his wife Mary, daughter of William Henry Ricketts of Longwood, Hampshire. William Carnegie, who in later life was promoted to admiral and subsequently commander-in-chief at Plymouth, led HMS Brittannia in the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805, and at his death he was buried in St. Paul's Cathedral close to the grave of Lord Nelson.
The first drawing was made two years before George Carnegie was lost at sea off Rodrigues Island in the Indian Ocean on board HMS Blenheim, on 2 February 1807. He is leaning against a memorial to his uncle, Captain William Henry Ricketts Jervis (1794-1805), who was drowned when his gig overturned at Brest, France, on 26 January 1805.
