Lot Essay

The model in the present drawing appears in similar poses in two oil paintings see Sotheby's, London, 5 September 1992, lot 38 and 1 December 1999 lot 24, which probably date from the 1920s. A drawing of the same model is illustrated in L. Browse, Augustus John Drawings, London, 1941, no. 61, although the date for this drawing is given as 1940.
