One of the most famous miracles performed by St. Michael; the pagans diverting the source of a river in order to destroy the chapel dedicated to him at Chonae, the archangel portrayed in a serpentine stance, preventing the catastrophe by plunging his spear into the river, attended by the chapel's only monk, the elderly St. Archippos, standing in front of the domed chapel with an image of the saint, a pagan figure struggling in the river, the golden domes and haloes glowing against the sombre colours of the scene
