the complete portfolio comprising 12 lithographs, with title and justification, and a text page with a poem by Kurt Heynicke (1891-1985), signed in purple crayon on the justification, copy number 27, from the total edition of 70 (the deluxe edition comprised the first ten copies, with the prints coloured by hand, on hand-made Zanders laid), printed by A. Bagel, Düsseldorf, on Drei Könige laid, watermarked GL (Galerie Flechtheim), each signed in pencil, dated, numbered 27 and inscribed Begegnungen, the text page signed by the author in blue ink, the full sheets, with deckle edges, H. 3739 with a crease and associated short tear at the upper left sheet corner, otherwise all in very good condition, within the original tan cardboard folder, with the name of the artist, title and publisher and one of the plates (H. 3737) lithographed on the front, the folder with some foxing on the inside, otherwise in very good condition(portfolio)

Lot Essay

A line from Kurt Heynicke's poem, which serves here as a foreword to the series of print, gave Alfred Hoh and the Lindenau-Museum Altenburg the title for catalogue of the collection of portfolios, illustrated books and periodicals: ... ruhelos und ohne des Schlafes Geschenk ("... restless and without the gift of sleep").
