Lot Essay

Schiefler remarked in his catalogue raisonné: 'Studienblatt in vier Abzügen' ('Study sheet in four impressions'). Günther Gercken however has been able to trace a total of six impressions, including the present one. Five of these are printed in the first state, and one in the second, final state. Two of the total of six known impressions are in public collections, one in the Museum Folkwang, Essen, and one in the Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main.

We are grateful to Professor Dr. Günther Gercken, Lütjensee, Germany, for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. Professor Gercken is currently preparing the new catalogue raisonné of prints by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.
