Lot Essay

George Ruck Keene joined the Royal Navy in 1849 and was made Lieutenant in February 1852. Having joined H.M.S. Juno a frigate mounting 26 guns he saw service in South and Central America in the 1850's and Log books kept by him at the time are illustrated with watercolours of the ports visited. The Juno, having been converted into a sail training ship in 1878 and renamed Atalanta disappeared without trace whilst on passage home from Bermuda in February 1880.
