Lot Essay
The text here translates: 'Two things in the world are enough for you, the companionship of a dervish, and the veneration of a saint'. These words are attributed to Abd al-Qadir al-Kaylani (d. 1166 AD), the founder of the Qadiriyya order of dervishes (Sevket Rado, Turk Hattatlari, Istanbul, p. 186 and Süleyman Berk, Hattat Mustafa Rakim Efendi, Istanbul 2003, p. 33).
Isma'il Zühdi (who carries the honorific Reis al-Khattatin, Head of the Calligraphers) was a teacher of calligraphy at the Topkapi palace, and the principle teacher and older brother of the celebrated Ottoman calligrapher, Mustafa Raqim Effendi. Four calligraphic panels by Isma'il Zühdü are in the Sabanci collection in Istanbul, as well as in the Topkapi Saray Museum, and in the Museum of Islamic Calligraphy - also in Istanbul (Abdulkadir Karahan, Sabanci Hat Kolleksiyonu - The Sabanci Collection of Calligraphy, Istanbul 1985, plate 15).
He is buried in the cemetery of Edirnekapi in Istanbul.
