GAZZADI, Domenico and Antonio BASCHIERI. Zoologia morale esposta in cento venti Discorsi in versi o in prosa ... colle notizie scientifice. Florence: Vincenzo Batelli & Co., 1843-[46].
2o (422 x 298mm.) Half-title, 93 hand-coloured engraved plates showing 120 animals in landscapes by J. Giarre with text below, with one leaf (torn and repaired) 'Articolo estratto dal Giornale del Commercio, Anno VI, no.15, Firenze, 12 Aprile 1843' inserted after gathering 75. (Spotted and marginally water-stained, 8 plates browned, some minor soiling). Contemporary Italian half calf, spine blindstamped with gilt ruling and lettering (slightly rubbed).
Possibly the rarest Italian colour-plate books of zoological interest, with the subjects displayed in their natural habitat, in landscapes with vegetation, rivers, mountains, icebergs etc. The illustrations follow the style of Alessandri's Animali quadrupedi of 1771-75, not particularly accurate, but with 'rather good descriptions by Baschieri' (Wood). The index of animals identify the 120 subjects with the relevant leaf of text, but not specifying the accompanying illustration. This has led most bibliographies to count incorrectly the number of plates, Nissen and Wood both stating 119 plates.
The inserted leaf from the 'Giornale del Commercio' comprises a review of the first part (of the 46 issued) by A.M. Izunnia, referring to Prof. Gazzadi 'from Sassulo' and Baschieri 'from Modena', stating the first three plates are of the Lion, the Elephant and the Dromadery, 'La grandezza delle figure è tale a dare un' idea chiara degli animali, che mi sembrano ben ricavati da esati disegni, incisi con amore e con amore colorati'.
Nissen ZBI 1492; Wood, p.352.
