CURZON, George Nathaniel, Marquess Curzon of Kedleston (1859-1925). A series of approximately 35 autograph letters signed ('P' or 'Pappy') to his wife Mary ('Darling Kinkie'), Southport, Sandringham, Windsor, 4 Carlton Gardens, House of Commons, Balmoral, Kedleston and elsewhere, 26 September 1895 - 28 November 1898, approximately 204 pages, 8vo (some browning), in wrappers numbered '5' and '6'.
An affectionate series of letters early in his marriage, covering the first years of the new Salisbury government of 1895 (in which Curzon was under-secretary of state at the Foreign Office) and his appointment as Viceroy of India in August 1898. Subjects include speeches in his constituency at Southport, settling into 4 Carlton Gardens (describing the furnishings: 'Kinko will be quite pleased'), criticising the Prime Minister ('Lord S. did not (in my opinion) make at all a good speech. He revealed nothing: left things just as they were: derided the opposition criticism; made jokes about Providence ...'), sacking his coachman, meeting the King of Siam ('he talked with the utmost frankness about everything at the top of his voice'), lunching with Gladstone ('he wished me all success in fishing but betrayed not the faintest interest in my public life or career'), going to Balmoral for an interview with the Queen ('Dress cut very open over her neck & shoulders so that one could see her well-padded body'; her advice to the viceregal couple was 'to appear on public occasions only in carriages or on horseback') and other domestic and political concerns.
The Curzons married on 23 April 1895; they departed for India before Christmas 1898, and Curzon was proclaimed Viceroy on 6 January 1899. (2)
