Lot Essay

Born in New Jersey, Caroll K. Bassett was a leading steeplechase rider in the 1930s and winner of over 100 races. He won the U.S. Grand National and two National Steeplechase Hunt Cups (1933-34) on Mrs Marion duPont Scott's famous horse Battleship. After studying at the Art Students League in New York, he later became an accomplished equine sculptor.

Another cast of this work was in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Jefford.
