Lot Essay

Louis Deglatigny (1834-1936), whose collector's mark can be seen in the lower left corner of the present watercolour, was a member of the Chamber of Commerce in Rouen, France, and became a renowned collector, amassing a large collection of watercolours, engravings and books by Rowlandson, which was sold at Sotheby's, London, 11 May 1938.
