A SAXON LEFT-HAND DAGGER; AND AN EMBOSSED IRON SCABBARD
THE FIRST EARLY 17TH CENTURY
THE SECOND DATED 1671
With slender blade of flattened-diamond section, both sides etched with the Electoral arms of Saxony quartered with those of the Archmarshalship of the Empire in a cartouche surmounted by an Electoral hat, bladesmith's mark of Wilhelm Wiersberg (of Solingen) also etched on both sides, and with a German inscription in two parts over the respective sides, iron hilt with arched forward-swept quillons with fluted triangular tips, small fluted ring-guard, fluted pommel, and the grip bound with patterned wire between 'Turk's heads' (light pitting); the scabbard of embossed iron, the inner face punched with the date '1671', the outer face convex and decorated with panels of scrollwork involving a pierced figure in early 17th century dress (modern wooden core)
