Lot Essay

The prime version of this painting featured in a sale at Christie's on 8th June 2006 (lot 211) and was sold for £90,000, a world record for the artist. The charming and intimate portrait depicts the artist's wife Elizabeth and their young daughter. Mary Edith's birth in 1852 helps us date this contemporary copy to roughly this date.
