Lot Essay

Tintern Abbey was founded by Walter de Clare, Lord of Chepstow, on 9 May 1131. It was the first Cistercian foundation in Wales, and only the second in all of Britain. Now a magnificent ruin, Tintern Abbey has inspired a number of artistic creations, among them Wadsworth's poem Lines composed a few miles above Tintern Abbey and several paintings by J.M.W. Turner, R.A.
