Medallion by George Bower 1688
Archbishop of Canterbury William Sancroft (1617-93) and the seven bishops petitioned James II against the reading of the Declaration of Indulgence which would have encouraged general religious tolerance. They were sent to the Tower but aquitted, however, Sancroft refused to take the oath to William and Mary and was deposed in 1690
