Lot Essay

Neil Gow (1727-1801), the famous Scottish fiddler was born at Inver, near Dunkeld into a poor family. During his long life he enjoyed wide popularity amongst the nobility in Scotland, his especial patron being the Duke of Atholl. He composed over a hundred strathspeys and laments, giving a fresh impulse and character to Scottish music, but his fame rests mainly on his violin playing. Raeburn painted his portrait on several occasions
