These striking bookcases were part of the custom furnishings designed by Renzo Mongiardino for the library of New York financier and philanthropist Peter Jay Sharp's apartment at 778 Park Avenue. Mongiardino created custom furnishings of the highest quality to seamlessly blend with his clients' often legendary collections.
The late Renzo Mongiardino was one of the most dramatic and theatrical designers of the 20th century, often drawing his inspiration from the Antique, Renaissance and Baroque. He originally started out his career as a theatrical designer, and utlized his trompe l'oeil techniques from the stage to mimic marbles, tooled leather, and marquetry. They formed a grand backdrop for the magnificent interiors he created for clients including Gianni Agnelli, Baron Hans Heinrich von Thyssen-Bornemisza, Baron Guy de Rothschild and Gianni Versace.
