FIRST EDITION. A COMPLETE SET IN THE ORIGINAL PART WRAPPERS. Girault de Prangey is one of the great early photographers. Having covered the entire area from Aswan through Cairo, to Jerusalem and the Holy Land, Lebanon and Baalbek, Syria, Asia Minor, Constantinople and Greece, he returned to France with about 900 daguerreotype plates of exquisite quality and sharpness. He used these to prepare the plates in this book, which has loaned the lithographs extraordinary verisimilitude. The present copy uniquely has two settings of the first bifolium of text, the later setting accompanied by a printed notice of correction advising subscribers to discard the other setting. RARE: not in Abbey, Atabey, Blackmer or Brunet. Naef, Photographers of Genius at the Getty, p.20 ('published in a very small edition'); Perez, Focus East: Early Photography in the Near East 1839-1885, pp.167-168; Présence de l'Egypte: dans les collections de la Bibliothèque universitaire Moretus Plantin, p.222 no.93 (24 plates).
