On J.M.W. Turner and Pre-Raphaelite painters. To S.R. Gifford he writes 'I was truly glad to find I was not too late to be of some use. I shall be most happy to show you my Turners when you return to town'. Turner is also the subject of his letters to Bartell ('I am very glad to hear of your having authority at Crystal Palace ... I wish I could be of use, but I can't at present -- My head is wholly taken up by Turner') and to an unknown recipient who asked for a Turner autograph ('I hear there are many papers of his still in the hands of the heirs at law'). Elsewhere are references to Rossetti and perhaps Holman Hunt ('I am sincerely grateful to you for the loan of the sketches by Mr Hunt'). (6)
