2° (434 x 275 mm). 7[1]p. 2 tinted lithographic views, 2 folding hand-coloured lithographic plans. (A few edge tears and repairs, one plan slightly soiled at margin.) 20th-century half vellum, original wrappers bound in (wrappers stained and restored). Provenance: Comte Alain de Suzannet (bookplate; his sale Sotheby's, 22 November 1971, lot 148) -- William E. Self (his sale, Christie's New York, 2 April 2008, lot 192).

THE VERY RARE AUCTION CATALOGUE OF GAD'S HILL PLACE, with views of the house from North and South and a vignette of Dickens's "chalet" on the front wrapper. Having admired the house on the hilltop between Gravesend and Rochester as a boy, his purchase of Gad's Hill for £1,790 in 1856 was striking evidence of the social status he had achieved with no resources other than indomitable energy, great entrepreneurial flair and a very marketable talent. In 1860 he moved in and lived there for a decade until his death in 1870.
