BOLOGNA 1530 -- HOGENBERG, Nicolaus (c. 1500-39). Gratae et laboribus aequae posteritati. Caesareas sanctique patris longo ordine turmas aspice. [Presumably Holland, perhaps England: mid-17th century].
Median broadsheets (415 x 330 mm). Engraved title (bound at the end), engraved dedicatory verse [by Johannes Secundus (1511-36)], and 38 etched and engraved plates forming a continuous frieze of the cavalcade. (Dedication-leaf backed with paper.) Contemporary English vellum over pasteboard (defects to spine). Provenance: Elizabeth Kingsman (calligraphic signature c. 1700); Ramsay family of Barnton, co. Edinburgh (armorial bookplate).
RARE FINAL STATE (of seven) of this celebrated series of etchings by Hogenberg, depicting the procession through Bologna on 24th February 1530 following EMPEROR CHARLES V'S CORONATION BY POPE CLEMENT VII. It was originally issued by Engelbert Bruining shortly after the event, probably from Antwerp. During the next hundred years the copperplates were repeatedly reworked in the hands of various publishers including Henricus Hondius of The Hague; this final state has Hondius's name removed, clouds added to the scenes and the last plate materially altered. The plates at this late stage probably remained in Holland, but could also have migrated to England. They are printed on a uniform paper stock (watermark of a small double-headed eagle). In the literature there is considerable confusion about editions and states of this work, but all impressions appear to have been made from the original copperplates, however re-engraved or whatever the date of printing. Brunet III, 250; Funck p. 335; Hollstein Dutch IX, 64 (31-70); Lipperheide Si 4; Ruggieri 891 and 891bis; Vinet 553; cf. Watanabe 696.
