William Groombridge was born in Tunbridge, Kent, and was most famous for his Kentish landscapes and miniatures. Little is recorded of his education, although it is known he was a pupil of James Lambert. Until 1790 he was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy, London. By 1793, he was recorded in New York from where he moved to Philadelphia in 1794, and founded the Columbian Art Academy. He moved to Baltimore in 1804 where he died in 1811.
