Lot Essay

Agnes Pringle was a portrait and figure artist who studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1882. She exhibited paintings at the Royal Institute in 1884 and 1893 and at the Royal Society of British Artists from 1890 to 1894.

Hedley was a successful portrait painter who exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1879. He was also well known for his genre scenes and depictions of local life; Blinking in the Sun (Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle), which depicts a cat sitting on a windowsill is perhaps his most famous painting.
