OLD CALIFORNIA SWEET WINES
Isaias Hellman was president of 17 banks, including Wells Fargo. A leading California financier and German Jewish immigrant, Hellman purchased a vineyard east of Los Angeles in 1871 and, with help of winemaker Jean Louis Sainsevain (whose uncle was one of the first to bring vitis vinifera to California), began producing wine. Aged for five decades, this wine was bottled during prohibition.
