8o (165 x 103 mm). 2-page publisher's advertisements at end. Engraved frontispiece and additional title by John Thompson after Daniel Maclise, wood-engraved illustrations by G. and E. Dalziel, Thomas Williams and W.T. Green after Richard Doyle, Clarkson Stanfield, John Leech, and Maclise. Original red fine-ribbed cloth, covers with decorative blind border surrounding central gilt vignette and lettering on upper, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, all edges gilt (two tiny stains on spine). Provenance: Ann Parsons (signature dated December 25th, 1846).

FIRST EDITION, with the second (usual) state of the vignette-title before the cupid was added to the scroll, and only preceded by an extremely scarce issue in which the words "A Love Story" appear in type below the illustration. Dickens's fourth Christmas book, written while in Geneva and published on 19 December 1846. 23,000 copies were sold within the first twenty-four hours. Eckel, pp.121-123; Sadleir 681; Smith II: 8.
