20 parts in 19, 8o (223 x 141 mm). Half-title. Engraved frontispiece, title and 38 plates after Hablot K. Browne ["Phiz"] (plates in part 2 and part 10 with minor marginal repairs not affecting image). (Some occasional pale spotting, part 12 lacking ad slip "Visit to the Exhibition".) Original printed blue-green pictorial wrappers (most rebacked, a few short repaired tears at edges, a few repairs); green cloth folding case. Provenance: G. Henfrey (signature on front wrapper of parts 2, 3, 4, 6-10); Mrs. Simon (signature on front wrapper of parts 12-18).
FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL MONTHLY PARTS, with the "Copperfield Advertiser" in each part and all inserted advertisements called for Hatton & Cleaver. With four specimen leaves from "Lett's Diaries" ad in part 8; part 8 also with additional ad at front "New Illustrated Work by John Leech" on green paper; 8-page version of the "Working Man's Library" ad in part 12. Hatton and Cleaver note that the number of advertisements is fewer in David Copperfield than in any of Dickens's other works issued in 19 parts.
David Copperfield was Dickens's eighth novel, written at the midpoint of Dickens's career and very much drawing on the author's own life.
