Second English edition of this well-known work. First published in French, 1663-1684, it marks "the beginning of the great epoch of travel and exploration in the Levant." Thevenot began his travels in 1655, but returned to Paris in 1659 to prepare the first and longest part of his work for publication. This describes Constantinople, the Archipelago, Asia Minor and Egypt. In October 1663 he left Paris and travelled through Syria and Persia to India. In 1667 he died near Tabriz, leaving the second and third parts of his work in the hands of two editors, Petis de la Croix and Sieur de Luisandre. Wing T-887.
