Lot Essay

The present work originally had a label from the Atelier Delacroix sale, lot number 211, attached to the picture on the upper left, according to Lee Johnson. This establishes it as one of the Dix études ébauchées bought in 1864 by five collectors, one of which was Georges de Bellio, the famous collector of Impressionist paintings.
