Lot Essay

This is one of several paintings produced by Seago whilst traveling with Bertram Mill's circus. As a young artist he visited the circus in Norwich and was entranced by the excitement and romance of the circus ring. He followed the circus as their 'artist-in-residence' and later traveled with Baker brothers, a riding act. His experiences at this time led to the publication of a memoir entitled 'Circus Company' in 1933, with an introduction by John Masefield, the Poet Laureate.
