A cast bronze incense burner (koro) with figure of Minamoto Raiko
Meiji period (19th century)
With dark brown patination overall, details in inlaid gold, silver, and shakudo, the lid surmounted by a handle in the shape of a rock face with bamboo leaves and the seated Minamoto Raiko holding a staff at the center, bordered in bands of fretwork, stylized clouds and floral patterns, with large handles on either side each carved as writhing scaly dragons, the body with elaborate frames containing scenes in inlaid soft metal, with lions at each rounded corner near the base and on four short curved legs; the rockface with inlaid gold inscription Minamoto Raiko ason, eibu zensha (Minamoto Raiko the great, surpassing in valor and with an aim that is true) with another inscription on the reverse
