The cover finely carved along the edges with interlocked archaistic scroll, the pattern framing the zitan burl encircling a rectangular reserve inscribed wu dai shuai er zhi qi du, likely referencing an object dating to the Five Dynasties period, followed by Mai Ting zhen wan (precious plaything of Mai Ting), the sides carved with ruyi head-form scroll attractively framing the zitan burl of deep reddish-brown tone, the interior and base of the box lined with huanghuali
