Lot Essay

Gio Ponti conceived this décor specifically for this vase form in the summer of 1926, and in a letter dated 13th August 1926 he noted, ...having approved on the 4th of this month the decoration of the large vase with ropes, please arrange its execution for I could see it accomplished at the end of this month; We need to have two of these vases ready for a symmetric display at the Exhibition. Ponti is referring to the III Monza Triennale, 1927, in which a pair of vases were exhibited.
Two other examples of this design are known. One, originally in the Lauro collection, is now in a private collection in Verona, the second is in a private collection in Genoa.
