DARWIN, Charles (1809-1882). On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. London: W. Clowes and Sons for John Murray, 1859. 8°-in-12s (192 x 118mm). Folding lithographic diagram. (Very minor light spotting to verso of half-title, title and first two contents leaves.) Contemporary half dark-blue calf over marbled-paper covered boards, gilt spine with raised bands, buff morocco spine label, marbled edges (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: F. Bond (ink signature to verso of f.f.e.p.).
FIRST EDITION OWNED BY A SCIENTIFIC CORRESPONENT OF DARWIN'S. Frederick Bond (1811-1889) was an entomologist, lepidopterist and botanist. He corresponded with Darwin on entomological questions (Darwin Correspondence Project nos. 2837 & 2847) and sent Darwin a large number of moths with orchid pollinia attached to their proboscises (Orchids pp.35-6). Bond's copy of 'THE MOST IMPORTANT BIOLOGICAL BOOK EVER WRITTEN' (Freeman) was evidently rebound for him. Dibner Heralds 199; Freeman 373; Grolier Science 23b; Norman 593; PMM344b.
