MUNKA
A mi életünkböl. A Munka elsö fotókönyve -- From Our Life. The First Munka [Work] Photobook. Budapest: Munka, 1932.
Octavo (236 x 175mm). 44 black and white photographs. (Endpaper dye just touching a few edges.) Original red paper wrappers printed in black (a few small repairs).
FIRST EDITION. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT AND RAREST PHOTOBOOKS OF THE HUNGARIAN AVANT-GARDE. Edited by Lajos Kassák and designed by Lajos Lengyel, the book accompanied an exhibition in Szolnok where Kassak had also arranged a gathering of like-minded artists and liberal intellectuals. The show opened on 2 April 1932, and the next day local police shut down the exhibition, seized all the copies of Munka on sale, all the photographs, banned further meetings, and arrested Lajos Tabak, one of the photographers. The work's rarity suggests that copies seized by the authorities were probably destroyed. WorldCat locates apparently just one copy, at the National Library of Art in Washington, D.C.; no copy in the UK or the NYPL. See: Graphic Modernism. From the Baltic to the Balkans. 1910-1935, pp.34-5.
