Original black cloth, spine lettered in gold; original dust-jacket (dust-jacket with some short tears and a few small chips, light soiling). Provenance: Robert Frank (presentation inscription to:) -- Leo Stashin (American photographer) -- Swann (sold, lot 38, 7 May 1987).

FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF FRANK'S MASTERPIECE, A RARE COPY INSCRIBED NEAR THE TIME OF PUBLICATION: 'For Leo Stashin. Dec. 1959. Robert Frank'. 'The most renowned photobook of all... none has been more memorable, more influential, nor more fully realized... it changed the face of photography in the documentary mode' (The Photobook). Stashin exhibited in the first 'Photography in the Fine Arts' exhibition at the Metropolitan in 1959. This copy is in a very good example of the fragile dust-jacket.
