Original raspberry pink cloth, spine and upper side lettered in gilt, sides and spine stamped in blind; in a custom chemise and black morocco-backed slipcase. Provenance: Winston S. FIRST EDITION, PRE-PUBLICATION PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY CHURCHILL TO CHAMBERLAIN: 'To Neville Chamberlain from Winston S. Churchill Oct 14. 1930'. A remarkable association copy linking two of Britain's most important 20th-century prime ministers, and the two key figures in Britain's handling of Hitler and the century's defining conflict. With a leaf of Chartwell letterhead laid-in bearing the typed notice, dated 14th October 1930, that 'this book is confidential until its publication on Monday next'. In the period leading up to the publication of this first part of Churchill's autobiography, the two men had collaborated closely in Stanley Baldwin's government, when Chamberlain was a reforming minister of health. In spite of Churchill's fiercely critical attitude to the appeasement policies of Chamberlain's premiership in the late 1930s, when he was eventually invited into Chamberlain's war cabinet a strong partnership formed between the two men, and indeed Churchill retained the former prime minister as Lord President of the Council when he replaced him as premier. On 10 May 1940, when Churchill assumed the premiership from Chamberlain, he wrote to him: 'my first act on coming back from the Palace is to write and tell you how grateful I am to you for promising to stand by me, and to aid the country at this extremely grievous and formidable moment ... In these eight months we have worked together I am proud to have won your friendship and your confidence in an increasing measure. To a very large extent I am in your hands -- and I feel no fear of that' (Feiling, 442). Woods A37(a).
